For those new to the term, an angle is a way of influencing another player’s decision to your advantage. A typical example of this is suggesting you are going to fold when you are going raise. This encourages the other player to call and raises the pot. It is a subtle move but deliberately misleads the other player. Another example is stating a hand that is lower than that possessed, again encouraging the other player to call. This type of move is rare in online poker as the software offers protection and the play is anonymous. Although it is not illegal, it is definitely a dubious move and can be very unpopular. Whether you use it is up to you, but remember to respect your opponents otherwise you may not get a game.

Although it is a simple concept, there is much confusion arising when poker tactics and strategy are discussed. Basically the poker tactics are used to feed into the poker strategy that informs your long term game. The tactical element comprises of small, manageable steps; moves that are required at that moment in time to win that particular game. Tactics may win you a pot but are not wholly reliable and they should not stand alone; tactics are short-term actions which serve the purpose of helping to achieve the strategy. If you are not achieving the results you desire in poker, you may not be looking at your strategy correctly.

Any poker strategy should be a comprehensive and closely planned series of actions that highlight the player’s long-term goals and ambitions. Central to the strategy is your long term goal. This could be to play alongside a poker legend, to come first in a tournament, or to qualify for the WSOP. Whatever the goal, it should be reflected in your choice of game and the way you play. Look at the recent choices you have made regarding game selections. Then consider your play. Do these reflect your long term goal or did they merely serve as a means to an end at that time? A good poker strategy should make your decisions easier; it should inform your game and be always kept in mind.
